When he saw our first retirement retreat is in the Loire Valley, he invited us to visit. So⊠itâs happening. đ That means our scouting trip now includes Tours, Amboise, OrlĂ©ans, and two smaller villages in between (MontrĂ©sor and ChĂ©digny)âall woven together with wine tastings, expat meet-ups, and at least one âlunch in a vineyardâ situation. These personal connections genuinely make my day. On to the newsletter... Affiliate Disclosureâ đHidden Gem - OrlĂ©ansâOrlĂ©ans sits on the Loire River in the Centre-Val de Loire regionâperfect if you want Loire Valley scenery plus a city that feels vibrant and everyday-friendly. Itâs lively, walkable, and has real year-round momentum (not just summer-tourist energy). Youâll find a handsome old town with half-timbered streets, a cathedral that anchors the skyline, and long riverside paths that make daily walks feel like a vacation. And yesâJoan of Arc is everywhere here (in the best possible way). âLa Loire Ă VĂ©lo runs right through OrlĂ©ans, so youâve got one of Franceâs most scenic cycling routes literally at your doorstep. What I love about OrlĂ©ans for would-be retirees is the balance: you get history and scenery, but also practical city lifeâshops, healthcare, transit, and plenty of cafĂ©s for âserious French livingâ (aka people-watching with purpose). And compared with the big-name French cities, OrlĂ©ans can feel refreshingly doable from a budget standpointâmany cost comparisons place it meaningfully cheaper than Paris. đFAST FACTS: [Location] *Anything underlined is clickable đ AFFORDABLE FIND đBright 1-Bedroom Near the Jardin des Plantes, OrlĂ©ans â âŹ850/month This furnished one-bedroom apartment in OrlĂ©ans' quiet Saint Marceau neighborhood offers 47 mÂČ (about 505 sq ft) on the 3rd floor with a nice energy rating (C energy / A climate). TAX, VISA, OR HEALTHCARE TIP đĄQuestion:âIf Iâm not in France for 183+ days in a calendar year, do I have to file taxes?â Yes, you very likely do. Even if you arrive in September, France can still expect a tax return for the months you were there that year. In practice, itâs less about âcounting daysâ and more about your intent and your residency status. If you arrive on the VLS-TS Visitor visa planning to stay, youâre essentially telling France: âI intend to become a tax resident.â So donât assume that arriving late in the year means you can skip the paperwork. The good news: many retirees wonât owe French tax if all income is U.S.-based (Social Security, IRA/401(k) distributions, U.S. dividends, etc.). Butâand this is the keyâyou still have to file and report it in France. (And yes: itâs annoying. But itâs also very France. đ ) FRANCE MUST-WATCH đșđŽ The Loire By Bike (ĂchappĂ©es Belles) Experience the stunning Loire Valley by bike. ĂchappĂ©es Belles takes us on a gorgeous ride through one of France's most beautiful regions â the chĂąteaux, the vineyards, the river light. Bonjour Reader, This week's hidden gem is the birthplace of one of the most important scientists in human history. You've probably never thought about retiring there. That might be a mistake. From My Corner of the World Happy Tax Week. If you're reading this from the US, hopefully you've already filed â or at least made peace with TurboTax. Bonjour Reader, This week we're heading to a city Napoleon literally drew on a map â and it's quietly become one of the best-value retirement spots on France's Atlantic side. From My Corner of the World The end of March Madness always flips a switch in my head. Brackets go in the trash, and suddenly I want to be outside â walking, cycling, hiking, or just parked on the porch with the sunshine (and, let's be honest, the pollen). It's one of the things that pulled me toward France in the first...

Oh, and an updated newsletter format... đ From My Corner of the World I caught the moon mission launch on TV this week. Didn't even know it was happening â it just came on, and suddenly there was a rocket climbing into the sky. I stopped what I was doing. Because for a few minutes, it was hard not to...
